Skalpel
Skalpel have released a new album and will play at the B90 club on March 3rd, 2023!
After the success of the album "Highlight" and the single "Escape" remixed by Hani Rani, Skalpel's creators Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło felt that the formula of jazz and electronica they had developed still evoked vivid emotions. Their confidence was also boosted by their well-received concerts with a live lineup. "Origins" is thus a more adventurous and sonically diverse album. Scalpel, staying true to their roots, escape from routine by seeking cross-genre connections. The album "Origins," which was released on November 4, is an inspiring contemporary adaptation of various streams of electronica and millennium breakthrough dance music. It is preceded by the excellent single "Why Not Jungle" and its accompanying video. "Origins" features jazz as well as drum'n'bass, downtempo and electro, trip-hop and Balearic, breakbeat, hip-hop, Krautrock.
"This album is a kind of prequel. On it we go back to the music of the 90s that we listened to and that inspired us before we discovered the potential of jazz sounds. A bit of a fictional compilation like those once released by Mo'Wax, Ninja Tune, Wall of Sound, !K7. Nostalgia is mixed here with the desire to update those ideas and give them a contemporary sound. At the same time, this is an eyewitness and ear-witness account of one of the most interesting chapters in the history of electronic music." - Igor explains.
For years, Scalpel has combined inspiration from the local jazz tradition with a fascination with the possibilities of new electronics. The duo's first two releases, "Skalpel" and "Konfusion," recorded for the Ninja Tune label, resulted in outstanding reviews in prestigious music titles ranging from NME to Pitchfork, The Wire to DJ Magazine, and concerts around the world. The albums from the Ninja Tune catalog are now considered classics of jazztronica, while the subsequent "Transit"(2014) and "Highlight" (2020) are exquisite updates and modifications of the duo's unique analog-digital sound. The latter was released worldwide in cooperation with the cult outfit !K7 Records (Tosca, Tricky, among others). It was accompanied by a digital release with remixes by Hani Rani, Catz' n Dogz and Hatti Vatti. Skalpel's albums have been hitting the Polish Olis bestseller list (the latest "Highlight" from 2020 to number 13), while vinyl editions are bought up by collectors from the farthest corners of the globe. Winners of such awards as the Passport of Polityka, the Man with the Golden Ear, the Wrocław Artistic Award, honored with nominations for the Fryderyk as well as the BBC Gilles Peterson Award.
They will be available from 8.12 (Thursday) from 10:00 am!
